Paul’s Forgotten ’80s

Paul's Forgotten '80s

This virtual box set is inspired by the Absolute ’80s radio show of the same name and the recent spin off from the Now That’s What I Call Music team. It may come as a surprise to know that every song listed below made the UK top 20. So if you want a deeper look at the decade then I highly recommend Gary Crowley’s Lost ’80s which unearths some amazing gems and is surely the greatest compilation of this year. For this project – as always – the emphasis is on using the correct versions of each song i.e. the single mixes, the ones we heard on the radio at the time. Unfortunately the aforementioned Now 100 Hits attempt fails dismally in this regard. I have uploaded Paul’s Forgotten ’80s to my own iTunes and ultimately you will be able to stream it on Mixcloud with links to follow from 14 July 2019.

If I may say so that’s an impressive compilation and one which would work extremely well as a commercial release.

Out of interest did you make many mix tapes when you were younger and if so are there any that you can remember the track listings for?

  2. Seamus hogan says:

    Some great forgotten gems there
Would deffo buy it if it were available commercialy

Now that’s much more like it. The tracklisting on the new Now Forgotten 80s was OK, and got some things right (Big Audio Dynamite and Furniture to name but two) and a few genuine surprises (Nellie the Elephant, for example); but quite a few of those tracks aren’t THAT “forgotten”; well, certainly not on certain radio stations, anyway.
Excellent playlists, indeed. Don’t think I’d have done any better.

    • cosmo says:

What they REALLY set their foot in was with the dance remix of Almaz (another song that I was really hoping they’d include, only for them to use the wrong version!).

Thanks Cosmo. Jim Diamond’s I Should Have Known Better was a major cock up too – they used the re-recorded 1993 version. Album versions of Sly Fox, Judy Boucher. Wrong mix of Tarzan Boy. Yet The Hits Album ’80s (released April – also on Sony!!) gets almost all the 7″ edits right.

  4. Robert Bates says:

I would certainly buy a collection like that on cd if I saw in shops.Serious thought and care went into compiling that. Most compilation makers could take not.No fillers and duffers there.
