The Now Yearbook series has been a most welcome development. The Extra volumes are a further added bonus of triple CD goodness while the recently announced Vault entry is most intriguing. The purpose of this page is to showcase my mop-up Extra Plus editions. These are virtual double CD compilations of tracks that missed out on both the Yearbook, Extra & Vault releases. They just exist as Spotify playlists with the usual caveats re 7″ mixes. I’ll be adding them for each year in tandem with the Now team’s release schedule. One very important point – if a track from an Extra Plus playlist is subsequently included on a future Yearbook, Extra or Vault release, then a substitution will be made. See the comments for more details on these amendments. However if a track subsequently becomes unavailable on Spotify (greyed-out), then these will not be replaced.

No restrictions over licensing here (as long as the track is on Spotify of course) 😉
Absolutely none! Like my Chart Hits series; Spotify is the decider.
For your 1981 extra plus I’ll be upset it we don’t get
Chi Mai by Ennio Morricone
Grey Day by Madness
Chariots of Fire by Vangelis
Stars on 45 ABBA Medley by Starsound
It’s My Party by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin
The last one we won’t get as it appears to have disappeared from streaming sites
You’ll be mostly happy David…. tracklist done & dusted since last week, just road-testing now.
It’s My Party is on the commercial release 80-84 Extra CD set, due early Feb.
Why is “Waiting for a Girl Like You” on the playlist for 1981? That was released on NOW Yearbook 1982.
Just human error with the original spreadsheet and the private Spotify playlists (two versions on the go which were in draft until today). Corrected now. Thanks for pointing out.
No probs, Paul.
Oh, and “Heartache Avenue” was on Extra 1982. Someone in one of the collectors groups on Facebook pointed that out after a link to this page was posted.
Yes, Heartache Avenue is an interesting dilemma that I’m aware of. My Extra Plus 1983 playlist was created in December 2021 while Extra 1982 wasn’t released until March 2022. I do intend to change it at some point but haven’t go round to it yet.
Heartache Avenue now dealt with.
I Could Be Happy also sorted.
Main post updated along with tracklists & Spotify links.
Is it possible to upload these Now Yearbook Extra Plus playlists on your page on mixcloud.com. I don’t haven an Spotify account.
Hi Robert,
I did consider it but there are a number of logistical issues.
1/ Would need to manually rip most of the tracks from my vinyl and CD collection as I don’t already have them saved as MP3s. That would be very time consuming
2/ In some instances, I have had to settle for album versions on Spotify whereas for Mixcloud I would want to upload the single mix so there would be inconsistency.
3/ The Extra Plus playlists are restricted to what’s on Spotify i.e. It’s My Party would make my 1981 set if it was available. If uploading to Mixcloud, I’d be tempted to swap it out with another track.
I understand that it would be very time consuming to upload these playlists on Mixcloud. If you are ever going to do this, let me know. I still like to hear these playlists.
I guess that some things from your playlists are hard to find. Do you have an excel or PDF file, where all of the tracks are on? And also on which CD or LP we can find these versions?
“What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” would be a good addition to 1980 extra
Great track. What was story with it? Released 1980 but didn’t seem to chart until March 1981?
For Now Yearbook Extra 1979 my suggestions include Spirit Body and Soul by The Nolans,Just When I Needed You Most by Randy Vanwarmer,I Have A Dream by Abba,Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar,I Was Made For Loving You by Kiss,Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, Sunday Girl by Blondie and Angel Eyes by Roxy Music!
Thanks Damien – the last 3 came true – but some great suggestions otherwise.
Thanks Paul. I’ll check your extra plus out. 🙂
….sorry, check your email
LOL. I’ll try! (it seems to be rather visible above…)
Alrighty, thanks! I’ll have a look. And I might create a NOW Yearbook Extra Plus Plus 1979 for my own missing favourites… 😉
I think it’s a bit lazy that Life in Tokyo has appeared again on 79 extra. We’ve got in on Yearbook 82. I know the 82 one was a different mix but it didn’t even chart in 79. There are plenty of other great songs in 79. Reckon the compiler of this series is a Japan fan
Totally agree – I made that very point on Facebook. Unnecessary inclusion and another artist would have been far more deserving.
I wonder what version of Tarzan Boy we’ll get in Yearbook 85, probably the original but in 85 the summer remix was the version we were hearing on the radio and on Now 6. I never bought the single so I’m not sure what was available
I bought the 7″ – the Summer Remix was on the A-side as far as I recall. Hopefully we’ll get that.
Hi – Re the 1979 Extra Plus, one or two typos but main issue is Still by the Commodores was on the main 1979 Yearbook (cd4, track 14). As replacement, how about either Charlie Dore – Pilot Of the Airwaves or Phoebe Snow – Every Night?
Hi Kevin,
There’s a checking process to ensure this doesn’t happen. Unfortunately on this occasion, a step was missed along the way. Thanks very much for spotting it. I have a reserve list so Phoebe Snow’s great Macca cover has gone in there. Anita typo corrected 🙂 Thanks again
No problem – a good selection as always and 1979 was probably the year with the most “contenders” so far. I could list at least another 50! (PS one more typo … Patrick’s hit was Born To Be Alive).
Ah yes, I am not sure what I was thinking when typing that. Beach Boys’ Lady Lynda also in – on reflection, it works better than The Bellamy Brothers track.
And now we have the announcement of NOW Yearbook 1980-1984: The Final Chapter, to hoover up some of the songs from those five years that didn’t make the other Yearbooks. What do you make of that?
Surprised to see it. Some great tunes on it though.
Their announcement says “As we move forward to the second half of the 1980s, and we were delighted with the response to the 1979 edition back in September. However, we haven’t quite finished with those golden pop years 1980 – 1984.”
So that rules out 1978 and beforehand for now.
As per my update in the main post, I am going to re-jig my Extra Plus playlists on foot of this Final Chapter announcement but will hold off for a bit in case that has an Extra coming as well. Probably unlikely but you never know.
I don’t think this one was planned – probably a reaction to how well the existing volumes have been received. It’s very 1984-heavy – KevinK on SDE said 29 tracks from then. And 18 from 1983. No surprise given how strong both those years are for pop. On that basis, it probably made sense for them to do a mixture of the five years rather than an individual disc for each year – given the dearth of tracks from 1980 and 1981. On the other hand, I have plenty suggestions for More Extra Plus volumes for all years 1979-1984 so it probably does come down to what they can easily license.

1983
The Maisonettes – Heartache Avenue. Then appeared on Now Yearbook Extra 1982. Replaced by Care – Flaming Sword.
Why was there not any of the Showaddywaddy Hits fro. 1979-1982 on any these yearbooks such as Who put the bomp in the bompa bomp bomp footsteps , Multiplication, Blue Moon Why do lovers break each others heart, Anight at day gees, Sweet little rock n roller Remember Then…
No idea Stephen, you’d think at least one of them would be included. I’m not a huge fan of their later stuff so didn’t put them on mine.
Loving your more obscure choices alongside the bigger hits that the original collections ‘forgot’. Looking forward to your 1985 Extra Plus selections on 6th January!
Thanks Martin, it’s been great fun to do them.

You have made some very good choices in your playlists. I have forgotten about some songs, but now I do remember them. Thanks for sharing! I have also one question for you : Are you going to make a playlist for the “Now Yearbook ’80-’84 The Final Chapter”?
Thanks Robert. Yes, I have already done the playlist for Now Yearbook 1980-1984: The Final Chapter Extra Plus – will be published 3 February.
Literally waited all day for your Now Yearbook: 1980-1984 Final Chapter Extra Plus playlist (try saying that after you’ve had a few…).
Anyhow, PLEASE don’t keep us in suspense!!
It’s revealed above! Listed between 1984 & 1985. Let me know what you think. Actually I think the release of The Final Chapter Extra CD has been delayed by at least a week.
Aaaah, missed it!! DUHHH. 🤣
Maybe ‘EBTG – Each And Everyone’ is the only significant omission I could call out off the top of my head, but otherwise… LOOKIN’ GOOD!!
Thanks Martin
Each And Everyone is already on my Now Yearbook Extra Plus 1984 CD2
Great job on these. I’m in the process of re-creating your playlists via Tidal, since I’m not on Spotify. I would add “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)” by Pink Floyd to the ’79 set since it was a UK Christmas No. 1 and a huge seller all over the world.
Thanks Jacob, appreciate the feedback. Yes, I wanted to include Another Brick but the 7” mix is not on Spotify. As the album version is segued, it jars a bit on a playlist. I do have it on this CD – https://www.discogs.com/release/2373026-Various-The-80s-The-Album-Of-The-Decade
I have the 7″ version of “Another Brick in the Wall (Pt. 2)” on here: https://www.discogs.com/release/3072104-Various-Capital-Gold-Rock-Legends
Nice-looking comp that
Hello, Sir English (or nlgbbbblth),
I want to tell you that I have discovered your blog a few months ago and your listings of additional tracks (as they are so called “Extra Plus”) posted on Spotify are absolutely fabulous. They completely complement the Yearbook and Yearbook Extra compilations which delight those nostalgic for the great era of music.
I come back to you because I noticed last Monday that an announcement concerning the Extra edition of 1986 had been published before it’s mysteriously disappeared. I had time to pick up some great tracks that we are all looking forward to.
By typing the compilation code (CDYBENOW86) on the net, you can find visuals of the upcoming compilation, with the list of titles of course.
Otherwise, there is this link, very recent, if it can help : https://www.roanrecords.co.uk/product/now-yearbook-extra-1986/
Praying to heaven that the Now Music teams draw inspiration from your Extra Plus listings to contact us with future and essential Yearbook Extra & More (“Now Yearbook – Damn it ! Why did we forget these titles !”). ^^
Sorry for my English, I’m French ! 😉
Thank you! Much appreciated. Yes, the 1986 Extra looks good, a lot of favourites there. Glad you are enjoying the playlists; they are great fun to put together. Just compiling Extra Plus 1986 now…..
Surprised Gary Numan’s We take Mystery isn’t on any of the compilations. A top 10 hit from 1982.
I did consider it for CD2 of 1982 but went for 101 Damnations instead
Good choice. Another song from 1981 I haven’t heard in years was I Wanna Be A Winner by Brown Sauce (Noel Edmonds etc.) It was a pretty big hit at the time.
I remember that one! Sadly not on Spotify. Like so many other novelty tracks.
Not that they’re bad by any stretch but I think the 85 and 86 yearbooks (and extras) were a little bit disappointing, 85 especially. Maybe it’s because those years (particularly 85) were great years for pop and even if there were another five extra editions for them, they’d still be missing some classics.
Luckily the recent Now Dance 80s set has more than made up for any slight disappointment in the yearbooks.
Yes, the Now Dance 80s set was unexpected – great to see – especially CD1.
I like the 1985 Yearbook & Extra. 1986 slightly less – pity that Pet Shop Boys and Erasure won’t make it.
They probably couldn’t get the licence for the songs by Erasure and Pet Shop Boys. Just like the couldn’t get it for the songs by David Bowie, Michael Jackson and Madonna.
Depeche Mode and Stevie Wonder also. There are too many artists who are not in the Yearbook compilation series. Unless another compilations happen in parallel to the Yearbook series in the future… After all, there are few artists who appear in other NOW compilations (like DM or Madonna), why wouldn’t they appear in a new series of compilations ?
Also Stevie Wonder, The Jacksons, Janet Jackson, Genesis (aside from Mama – which is weird,) Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Kraftwerk, Cyndi Lauper, Jon & Vangelis, Talking Heads, Van Halen, Dire Straits, Bee Gees, Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Ottawan, Herbie Hancock (Rock It). Probably others but those plus the ones listed above are big omissions.
I think the Pet Shop Boys omission is down to the band themselves. They don’t want to be associated with new retrospective compilations. Possibly the same reason for Erasure although I am not 100% certain.
I’d recommend Jan Hammer Crockett’s Theme for the 1986 set. It was a number 2 hit and as yet doesn’t appear on any of the Yearbooks. The 1985 Extra set contains the Miami Vice theme, but Crockett’s theme was the bigger hit.
That should be on the following year’s set James. Was a hit in October 1987.
Thanks for the info. Wiki said it was released in 86 so I just assumed that’s when it became a hit. I had forgotten how long it was between the Miami Vice Theme and Crockett’s Theme hitting the charts.
Don’t rely on Wiki for UK chart info. Use the OCC website for that – http://www.officialcharts.com
Thanks for the link.
The musical adventure continues with the Yearbook Extra 1978 compilation announced for June 9th. For my part, I expected certain titles and they are there ! Bicycle Race (Queen), Oh Carol (Smokie), Greased Lightnin’ (John Travolta), Now That We’ve Found Love (Third World), Rasputin (Boney M.), Got To Be Real (Cheryl Lynn), Follow Me (Amanda Lear), Just The Way You Are (Billy Joel), The Eve Of The War (Jeff Wayne), Tommy Gun (The Clash), I Love America (Patrick Juvet)…

Looks great
These playlists are fascinating to show some of the major hits that Now left of. One I particularly enjoyed on a TOTP 40th anniversary rewatch recently was Tantalise by Jimmy the Hoover. It seems to have rarely been compiled and you haven’t included it either. 😦 I see you only include songs that are available on Spotify. Does that explain its absence from your mop-ups? It’s got such a catchy chorus that it seems a shame that it seems to be all but forgotten.
Hi TellyFan
Thank you. I enjoy putting them together as a complement to the physical editions. While some of my choices may be seen as unrealistic (i.e. Madonna, Prince, David Bowie), the whole point is to gather up the tracks that Now cannot or will not licence. That way, the Yearbook, Extra & Extra Plus when taken as a whole should give a comprehensive snapshot of the pop year in question.
There were a number of options available in terms of how I would present these.
1/ A simple list with no music links. This would mean I could include *anything* but the readers don’t get much out of it.
2/ Mixcloud – which means I could use my own collection but is time consuming to prepare (manual vinyl & CD ripping is tedious) and doesn’t have that wide a reach.
3/ Spotify – most straightforward and accessible.
So yes – availability on Spotify is the primary criteria here and I have a strong preference for single mixes. Album versions will feature as a last resort if not unduly lengthy. To be fair, the platform has improved a lot in recent years so most of what I want to include is available.
Tantalise is a fondly-remembered track that I wish I could have used. I did include it on Paul’s Forgotten ’80s – a Mixcloud set which you may have already seen – link is https://apopfansdream.wordpress.com/mixes/pauls-forgotten-80s/
Aside from inclusion on some 1983 compilations (also reviewed here), it has rarely surfaced on retrospective collections. I have the 7″ plus a CD version does exist on https://www.discogs.com/release/6142306-Various-Classic-Cuts-Remastered-69-One-Hit-Wonders
If somebody put together a Malcolm McLaren and associated / managed artists box set, then it would be an ideal song to feature.
Now Yearbook Extra Plus 1979
I note that Herb Alpert – Rise (7″ Mix) is now greyed-out on Spotify. These things happen occasionally. I’m leaving it on the playlist in the event that this a temporary issue.
I have compiled Now USA Yearbooks for 1983 and 1984 – see https://apopfansdream.wordpress.com/words/now-usa-yearbook/
A couple of things – In your 73 extra plus track list above “Tony Kenny Heart of stone” should be just Kenny. Tony Kenny was an Irish singer.
The version of Goin’ Home by The Osmonds in your Spotify playlist is the album cut from The Plan and not the original single version as on the MGM single. There is no coda at the end on the single. However, every compilation I have (including Osmonds ones) has the same WRONG version, EXCEPT for Reader’s Digest Sounds Of The Seventies 1973, which got it right! There was a time when CD compilers knew what they were doing. I have this as a 320k mp3 if you are a completist.
Thanks Mark
I always thought Tony Kenny was behind Heart Of Stone. I do own that Readers Digest Sounds Of The Seventies 1973 3CD set and it’s credited to him there. The comments on the Discogs entry also make reference to him – https://www.discogs.com/release/2803782-Kenny-Heart-Of-Stone
My preference is to use single mixes for the playlists but couldn’t locate Goin’ Home 7” mix on Spotify
I would love to start a thread illustrating where the “wrong” versions are always used on CDs, and I would do a playlist of these and “missing” tracks, but some are impossible to track down.
For example Top of the Pops by the Rezillos almost always uses the album track instead of the single. Likewise Roadrunner by Jonathan Richman uses the fast version not the slow one (much confusion caused by inconsistent naming of this track over the years!)
Completely missing in action are the two chart entries by White and Torch. The Muppets music hall EP is also MIA despite their UK albums appearing.
12 inches from my collection include Sir Dancealot by the Olympic Runners. Lots of radio play for both Sorry My Dear and Hit the road Jack by Buzzz. At least most of the above can be found on YouTube in varying quality.
Oh, and neither the 7 inch versions of Like Clockwork or Rat Trap by the Boomtown Rats appear anywhere. LC is a simple edit removing 2 lines but RT had resung lines.
We do what we can to keep these alive!
Good idea Mark
Yes very frustrating.
There is already good thread on Popjustice forum – https://forum.popjustice.com/threads/all-important-single-edits-on-cd.30966/
The Rezillos – Top Of The Pops is on https://www.discogs.com/release/384475-Various-No-Thanks-The-70s-Punk-Rebellion
White & Torch’s Parade – I have it on this CD https://www.discogs.com/release/473322-Various-1982-20-Original-Chart-Hits
I included it on Paul’s Hidden ‘80s box – https://apopfansdream.wordpress.com/words/pauls-hidden-80s/
I find that West German & Dutch compilation CDs of the 1980s are a good source of 7” mixes.
Have an upcoming virtual box called A Pop Fan’s Dream: The ‘80s which will have a number of rare 7” edits. Keep an eye on Words section.
No, Paul got it right. It was recorded by Irish singer Tony Kenny under the mononym “Kenny”, it reached No.11 in 1973. https://www.irish-showbands.com/Bands/tonykenny.htm
After Tony Kenny returned to the Irish showband circuit, Phil Coulter, Bill Martin and Mickie Most simply found another band to rechristen as Kenny for their next hit “The Bump”, in that case it was a progressive rock band from the north London suburb of Enfield called Chuff, so he’s using the singer’s name to differentiate him from the band using his name.
Well you learn something new every day!
I LIKE THE YEARBOOKS AND WHOEVER CAME UP WITH THE IDEA SHOULD BE KNIGHTED.PET SHOP BOYS APPEAR TWICE ON 88 YEARBOOK+TWICE ON 88 EXTRA.THEY R ALSO FEATURED TWICE ON THE UPCOMING YEARBOOK 90 ON 9.2.24.THE ONLY WRONG IS THAT ITS MISSING OUT ON MADONNA+ERASURE+DEPECHE MODE.
Re 1983: The Vault … I think I only saw 3 tracks (ONJ, Thomp. Twins, Talk Talk) from your Extra Plus list duplicated on the new 4CD set, so probably easy and worthwhile to update your list for that. Your 1983 USA Yearbook, on the other hand, has over 20 duplicates, so maybe easiest to just edit that down to a “3CD” list?
(tbh, not sure if there will be many releases in the Now Vault series – doesn’t sound like a big seller to me, particularly for “lesser” years than 1983!)
Thanks Kevin. There are are three more on my Final Chapter Extra Plus (OMD, China Crisis, Men At Work).
Marillion from Extra Plus 1983 on The Vault
Your Extra Plus playlist is more than just a listing of songs though, so a small number of tracks repeated in this new series (Vault) or any others that may come is not a big deal. Your playlist also has the benefit of being unrestricted by labels. So I hope you do keep these going.
Thanks
I make it
