Now 100 Hits Forgotten 80s Volume 3

I still think there’s plenty more mileage in Now’s Forgotten 80s series but it seems to have stalled after two releases. Here’s my proposed tracklist for an imaginary third volume. Once again, you get 100 tracks from right across the decade. I’ve tried to include single versions wherever possible and have put a lot of thought into the sequencing and flow. Obviously it doesn’t work as well on shuffle. This time, I’ve put the whole lot in one Spotify playlist for ease of sharing but the virtual CD markers are listed in the description.

Nice tracklist. I’d add a few in there…..

    Joe Fagin – Breakin’ Away
The lesser-played side of the Auf Wiedersehen, Pet double-A. Yes, the other side is more fun, more commercial and more radio-friendly but the opening theme is arguably the better song.

Big Sound Authority – This House
This song was heavily featured on a lot of light-entertainment shows at the time and it’s an absolute belter. Yet somehow, it never cracked the top twenty. Very rarely comped, hopefully it’ll show up on the 85 Yearbook if they get round to one.

    Squeeze – 853 9537
Even though it barely scraped into the top 100, it was another of those songs that appeared in the “music slot” in entertainment shows. I’m sure I recall it being on one of these shows whilst the comedians flashed up cards with the numbers on during the chorus but I could have dreamt it. Regardless, it’s one of the most underrated songs by one of the most underrated bands ever.

Spitting Image – Santa Claus is on the Dole
Obviously The Chicken Song is anything but forgotten but their other top 40 hit is less fondly recalled. Would be nice to see it here. Then again, it would be nice to see The Chicken Song somewhere as its quite elusive to find on CD (again, maybe a 86 Yearbook could rectify that).

    Duran Duran – Careless Memories
For whatever reason it doesn’t appear on either Decade or Greatest, despite its appearance on Arena. When I saw them live in 2005 they played it live and it was one of the highlights of the night. Finding an 80s compilation without a Duran track is rare, finding this one is rarer.

The The – The Beat(en) Generation
One of the more chart-friendly hits from The The. It’s simple, more accessible and as addictive as smoking. Not that they weren’t good without him but Johnny Marr’s short time with them helped out, then he trotted off to form Electronic.

Danny Wilson – The Second Summer of Love
Mary’s Prayer is another of those songs that crops up on many a compilation and seems to grant them “one-hit wonder” status for some. But I prefer their other top 40 hit. One of the highlights of Now 15.

Whoops, managed to put the wrong number on the Squeeze song!

Thanks Feel The Quality, some great suggestions there. Big Sound Authority track is a classic; aside from Hits 2 and Teldec’s Cocktail Hour & Cool Emotions (ace compilation and one of my earliest CDs), it doesn’t get the run out it deserves. Good call on the Squeeze track too. Love Careless Memories. That and My Own Way are completely overlooked. Hopefully the 1986 Yearbook will revive some novelty tunes like The Chicken Song & maybe Just Say No and It’s ‘Orrible Being In Love. Would say no to Starting Together either….

Please could you do Now Forgotten 90s Volume 2?
